Warning! Major Spoilers for Avengers Endgame

The world is all hyped by the Marvel’s blockbuster movie Avengers End game. It’s playing in theaters as of this writing. The epic finale of 10 years of Marvel movies revolves around the Infinity Gauntlet that houses the six infinity stones. It was used by Thanos to wipe out half of the universe in Avengers: Infinity War. The metallic glove holds all the 6 infinity stones and all you need to do is snap your fingers and half of the population is gone. Have you asked yourself how that would work in a logical point of view and why you need all the stones? Thanos himself said that with all the stones, he can simply snap his fingers and half of the population would disappear. He would only do that with all the stones. Each stone represents an important aspect of existence. Together, the stones give the bearer the power to create and destroy.  Below, we will break down, the role of each stone in the snap and why you need all of them. Please note that there are Major Avengers: Endgame Spoilers

 

SUMMARY

• Mind Stones: Reads bearer’s mind to learn their intention with the snap
• Soul Stone: Houses the souls of those snapped away
• Reality Stone: Determines the transition of the beings being snapped away e.g. dusting, fading, melting away e.t.c.
• Space Stone: Determines how far the snap needs to reach e.g. a region, a planet or the whole universe
• Power Stone: Fuels the process by giving it the energy it needs
• Time Stone: Brings control and order to the process

Mind Stone

The Mind stone is a remnant creation which governs the mind and has the fabric of a mind. When you put on the glove containing the six stones, this stone will interface with your mind and read your thoughts. With you and the stone linked, you can easily snap your fingers and it will know your intention.  Thanos snapped his fingers with the intention of eliminating the population, professor hulk snapped it with the intention of bringing back the lost population while Tony stack snapped it to wipe out Thanos and his Army. They all didn’t need to say a spell to do that. They just needed to think about their intentions and the mind stone knew what to communicate with the rest of the stones.

Soul Stone

The soul stone represents an important aspect of existence, it houses the souls or beings. When Thanos snapped out half of the population, it is believed that their souls were stored in the soul stone. After Thanos snapped his fingers, he briefly traveled to the soul world where ‘It is believed’ contained all the souls of the dead. That is why it’s important to have the soul stone during a snap.

Reality Stone

The reality stone is a powerful stone that grants it’s bearer the power to change reality, Thanos used it first in Knowhere to create a false reality for the Guardian’s of the galaxy. During a snap, the reality stone is responsible for creating a transition between life and death. In both Thanos and Iron man snap, the reality stone uses dusting to transfer beings from reality world to the soul world. It’s not clear if you have other options like making beings melt away, fade away or bust into frames.

Space Stone

The space stone represents a fabric of the universe responsible for space. It grants it’s bearer ability to teleport to any part of the universe. During the snap, the space stone is responsible for determining how far you want the effects of the snap to go. The bearer of the gauntlet may decide to snap out the population on a planet or the whole universe. Thanos first snap targeted the whole universe. In Avengers Endgame, Thanos tells Iron man that the universe has moved on and that Earth is the problem. He proceeds to say that he will use the gauntlet to wipe out all of Earth’s population. The space stone must be responsible for determining the scope of the snap.

Power Stone

The power stone is a powerful entity that grants its bearer great cosmic power. Its power was used to destroy entire civilizations. In the gauntlet and during a snap, the power stone powers the whole process. Consider it the fuel of the snap. The stone is usually not held by hand because it’s very powerful and will easily kill the bearer. The excess energy released by the stone while powering the snap may explain while the gauntlet and the bearer’s hand is greatly burnt during a snap.

 

Time Stone

It’s unclear what the role of the stone – that controls time- is during a snap, but I can theorize that it is used to bring order and control to the whole snap process. Since time is an important aspect of existence, the stone wires and gives the process a time stamp. Also, the fact that the gauntlet gives the bearer the power to create and destroy, the time stone is the timekeeper that makes the process sequential and in order. The gauntlet was used three times to do three separate things. The time stone was used to stamp the events in the order they happened.
